Outdoor First Aid - 16 hour

Formats - Fully on-site or Blended

This course is available as either:

  • Fully on-site (2 days face-to-face), or
  • Blended* (eLearning + 1 day face-to-face)
Face-to face training is delivered at your venue. It can be delivered at the weekends, in the evening, or in half day sessions if required. The high quality interactive eLearning can be completed by learners on any internet connected device, at a time, place and pace to suit them. * Please note that Mountain Training now accept blended learning first aid qualifications.


This course will give learners the knowledge, skills and confidence to look after an adult or child who becomes injured or unwell in the outdoors, possibly remote from help. The course will be highly practical and taught by a specialist Paramedic who's also a mountaineer, climber, paddler and mountain biker. Expect lots of realistic scenarios... It is ideal for those working or playing in the outdoors, including on expeditions. It meets the first aid requirements of National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications such as:

  • Mountain Leader (ML)
  • Hill and Moorland Leader
  • Lowland Leader
  • Duke of Edinburgh Leader


As a minimum, this course will cover...


  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Incident management
  • Casualty assessment
  • Evacuation

Respiratory problems:

  • Choking
  • Unconscious person
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Asthma

Cardiovascular problems:

  • Bleeding
  • Shock
  • Cardiac arrest (CPR and AED)

Neurological problems:

  • Seizures and Epilepsy
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • Head injuries

Musculoskeletal problems:

  • Spinal injuries
  • Limb and joint injuries

Environmental problems:

  • Burns
  • Bites and Stings
  • Hypothermia
  • Heat illness
  • Minor injuries

Qualification - Optional

If required, this course may also lead to the Qualsafe Awards Level 2 Award in Activity First Aid (RQF) In this case, learners must be at least 14 years old and complete the course within 3 weeks.

Learners who successfully complete the course will be awarded an eCertificate, valid for 3 years.
