COURSE OVERVIEW

Line Managers, HR professionals and those in well-being roles are critical to mitigating the impact of mental health problems on their people and organisation.

This course will enable you to build a mentally healthier environment, whilst recognising and providing initial support to an adult or child who may be experiencing a mental health problem.

On successful completion, you may be referred to as a 'Mental Health First Aider', 'Mental Health Champion' or 'Mental Health Advocate'.

The first module will give you an understanding of the mental health continuum and how an individual's mental health may change over time.

You'll explore the risk factors for developing a mental health problem, as well as the relationship between substance use and mental health.

In the second module you'll look at the common triggers and early warning signs for specific mental health problems. You'll also explore organisations that provide specialised support for each condition.

The third module will help you to make a difference in the real world.

You'll learn how to use the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan to start a safe and supportive conversation, encouraging appropriate self-help or professional support when necessary.

You'll also develop enhanced communication skills such as non-judgemental listening, as well as exploring how you yourself can become more mentally resilient.

Finally, in the last module you'll discover how you can use the HSE Management Standards and Stevenson-Farmer report to help you build an open and positive mental health culture.

We hope you'll leave the course with a renewed enthusiasm for managing mental health, as well as a list of things you can do to make things even better than they already are!
