This course will give learners the knowledge and confidence to provide appropriate initial support to an adult or young person who may be experiencing a mental health problem.
On successful completion, learners will be qualified as 'Mental Health First Aiders', sometimes also referred to as 'Mental Health Champions' or 'Mental Health Advocates'.
The first module will give learners an understanding of the mental health continuum and how an individual's mental health may change over time.
They'll explore risk factors for developing a mental health problem, as well as the relationship between substance use and mental health.
In the second module they'll look at common triggers and early warning signs for specific mental health problems. They'll also explore organisations that provide specialised support for each condition.
The third module will help learners to make a difference in the real world. They'll learn how to use the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan to start a safe and supportive conversation, encouraging appropriate self-help or professional support when necessary.
They'll also develop enhanced communication skills, including non-judgemental listening.
Finally, learners will explore how they can become more mentally resilient, as well as discovering ways that they can challenge stigma and contribute to a positive mental health culture where everyone can thrive.
