COURSE OVERVIEW

This course will give learners the knowledge and confidence to provide appropriate initial support to an adult or child who may be experiencing a mental health problem. On successful completion, they may be referred to as a 'Mental Health First Aider', 'Mental Health Champion' or 'Mental Health Advocate'.

This is a shorter version of our 2 day course.

Learners will gain an understanding of the mental health continuum and how an individual's mental health may change over time. They will explore risk factors for developing a mental health problem, as well as the relationship between substance use and mental health.

Learners will then gain knowledge of common triggers and early warning signs for specific mental health problems. They will also explore organisations that provide specialised support.

Learners will then consider how they can make a difference. They will learn how to use the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan to start a safe and supportive conversation, encouraging appropriate self-help or professional support when necessary. Learners will develop enhanced communication skills, through non-judgemental listening.

Finally, learners will explore how to become more mentally resilient, as well as discovering ways that they can challenge stigma and contribute to a positive mental health culture where everyone can thrive.
